“I Could Have Danced All Night” is a song from the musical My Fair Lady, with music written by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, published in 1956. The song is sung by the musical’s heroine, Eliza Doolittle, expressing her exhilaration and excitement after an impromptu dance with her tutor Henry Higgins.
It was first performed by Julie Andrews in the original Broadway production of My Fair Lady. In the 1964 film adaptation of the musical, the song was sung by Marni Nixon, dubbing the singing voice of Audrey Hepburn, who played Eliza Doolittle.
Hit versions of the song were recorded by Sylvia Syms,DinahShore, Angélica María, Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney and Jamie Cullum. It was featured in The Birdcage sung byNathan Lane, Hank Azaria, Gene Hackman, Robin Williams and Dianne Wiest. Many actresses have also sung the song in the stage version of the musical including Martine McCutcheon, Laura Michelle Kelly, Amy Nuttall and Lisa O’Hare.
Peggy Lee did a Cha-cha-cha version on her 1960 album Latin ala Lee!
Andy Williams covered the song on his 1964 album The Great Songs from My Fair Lady and Other Broadway Hits. Petula Clark recorded a version for her 1968 album The Other Man’s Grass Is Always Greener.
The song was performed by Jane Powell in the 1959 NBC television special Sunday Showcase “Give My Regards to Broadway”, for which a kinescope recording still exists. The song was performed by Jayma Mays on the FOX television show Glee on the episode “Mash-Up”.
I Could Have Danced All Night was performed by young British soprano Hollie Steel during her audition on Britain’s Got Talent. She later recorded the song on her debut album.
The Andrews Sisters were a highly successful close harmony singing group of the swing and boogie-woogie eras. The group consisted of three sisters: contralto LaVerne Sophia Andrews (July 6, 1911 – May 8, 1967 Age 55), soprano Maxene Angelyn Andrews (January 3, 1916 – October 21, 1995 Age 79), and mezzo-soprano Patricia Marie “Patty” Andrews (bornFebruary 16, 1918Age 94). Throughout their long career, the sisters sold well over 75 million records (the last official count released by MCA Records in the mid-1970s). Their 1941 hit “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” can be considered an early example of rhythm and blues or jump blues.
The Andrews Sisters’ harmonies and songs are still influential today, and have been covered by entertainers such as Bette Midler, the Puppini Sisters and Christina Aguilera. The group was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998.

Lyrics
I Could Have Danced All NightEliza: Bed, bed, I couldn’t go to bed, My head’s too light to try to set it down. Sleep, sleep, I couldn’t sleep tonight, Not for all the jewels in the crown. I could have danced all night, I could have danced all night, And still have begged for more. I could have spread my wings And done a thousand things I’ve never done before. I’ll never know what made it so exciting, Why all at once my heart took flight. I only know when he Began to dance with me, I could have danced, danced, danced, All night! Servant 1: It’s after three now. Servant 2: Don’t you agree now, Servant 1 & 2: She ought to be in bed. Eliza (Eliza’s Maids): I could have danced all night, (You’re tired out, you must be dead.) I could have danced all night, (Your face is drawn, your eyes are red.) And still have begged for more. (Now say goodnight. Please turn out the light please.) (It’s really time for you to be in bed.) I could have spread my wings (Do come along, do as you’re told.) And done a thousand things (Or Mrs. Pearce is apt to scold.) I’ve never done before. (You’re up too late. Please, in your state,) (Miss, you’ll catch a cold.) I’ll never know what made it so exciting, Why all at once my heart took flight. I only know when he (Put down your book, the work will keep.) Began to dance with me (Now settle down and go to sleep.) I could have danced, danced, danced, All night! Mrs. Pearce: I understand, dear. It’s all been grand, dear. But now it’s time to sleep. Eliza: I could have danced all night, I could have danced all night, And still have begged for more. I could have spread my wings, And done a thousand things I’ve never done before. I’ll never know What made it so exciting, Why all at once my heart took flight. I only know when he Began to dance with me, I could have danced, danced, danced, All night!
