屋頂上的提琴手”是美國百老匯一齣相當長壽的音樂劇，劇情是描述蘇聯境內一群居住在安納堤夫卡(Anatevka)的猶太家族的故事。1971年，這齣音樂劇被改編搬上銀幕，由大導演諾曼裘維森( Norman Jewison )執導，片中沒有一位大明星，但拍攝成績斐然，票房及奧斯卡提名方面均大有斬獲。
這部電影或音樂劇之所以成功，Jerry Bock 的原創音樂居功厥偉，裡面出現了多首傳唱不輟的名曲，包括” Tradition “、” If I were a rich man “、” Matchmaker”，以及” Sunrise, sunset”。
”日出日落”是片中猶太老夫婦和新婚的女兒女婿在火車站道別時所唱出的歌，昔日視為掌上明珠的女兒即將脫離父母的羽翼，和夫婿飛往新天地，年邁的父母在祝福裡依然悲從中來。
值得一提的是電影版的音樂由約翰威廉斯改編及指揮，1971年他還未在樂壇綻放光芒，但「屋頂上的提琴手」所改編的音樂卻為他贏得了首座奧斯卡。此外，電影版音樂中負責小提琴獨奏的是已故的大師 Isaac Stern 艾薩克史坦。
Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick. The show is set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, was the first musical to surpass the 3,000 performance mark, and it held the record for longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years until Grease surpassed its run.
Sun Rise, Sun Set is the song in “Fiddler on the Roof” sung at Motel and Tzeital’s wedding. It is about how fast the two children grew up. There are solos for Golde, Tevye, Perchik, and Hodel.
