“It’s Too Late” is a #1 song from Carole King’s 1971 album Tapestry (see 1971 in music). Toni Stern wrote the lyrics and King wrote the music. The piano part is audibly similar to the opening song of Stephen Shwartz’ musical Pippin, “Magic to Do”.
King’s version of “It’s Too Late” peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Adult Contemporary charts‒on the Hot 100 as a double A-side with “I Feel the Earth Move”.
King’s version of “It’s Too Late” was certified Gold by the RIAA.
“It’s Too Late” won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1972.

Lyrics
It’s too late Stayed in bed all morning Just to pass the time There’s something wrong here There can be no denying One of us is changing Or maybe we’ve stopped trying
*And it’s too late, baby, now it’s too late Though we really did try to make it Something inside has died and I can’t hide And I just can’t fake it It used to be so easy living here with you You were light and breeze And I knew just what to do Now you look so unhappy And I feel like a fool(*) There’ll be good times again for me and you But we just can’t stay together Don’t you feel it too Still I’m glad for what we had And how I once loved you(*) |
